ASU programming board hosts away-game football viewing parties
While Sun Devil Football hits the road, students can still join in on game-day fun.
The ASU Programming and Activities Board created a series of viewing parties at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex in Tempe so that students can come together to root on ASU.
PAB Game Day Director Akshat Mehta, 21, a senior studying political science, said that the PAB used to host their viewing parties at Sparky’s Den on the lower level of the Memorial Union.
“We decided to leverage the beautiful weather Arizona offers in the fall and tried to recreate the Inferno section,” Mehta said, referring to ASU’s famously lively student section at athletic events.
Students can expect to see lots of food vendors, music and games at away-game parties, including the chance to square-off in a friendly game of cornhole or simply relax. The parties have been held at the SDFC pool and now at the SDFC fields since the weather is cooling off.
“We're trying to recreate some of the fun half-time activities we see at the games,” Mehta said.
Business tourism student Oscar Valenzuela, 19, attended the viewing party on Sep. 27 when the ASU Sun Devils played the California Golden Bears.
After winning a game of giant Jenga, he spoke with ASU Student Life about the Sun Devil spirit-filled event, which aims to provide students a taste of both a pre-game tailgate and Inferno section fun.
“I would definitely come back to another [viewing party]. They have lots of games, it was cool to take a dip in the pool and the best part hands down was the shaved ice,” Valenzuela said.
The next away game and viewing party is scheduled for Nov. 16, when the Sun Devils will take on the Oregon State Beavers.
