Alone on campus after dark? Do you have a class that ends well into the night? Do you stay late to study? Is your car or dorm all the way across campus?

You can request a Safety Escort vehicle through the LiveSafe App to transport you to your on-campus destination.

The Undergraduate Student Government service was created in 1981 as a walking escort service; students would call for a companion to walk with them.

Now, students can open the LiveSafe App on their phone and request an escort vehicle to one of many key locations around the Tempe campus. Students can also call at (480) 965-1515.

Escort vehicles operate seven days a week, from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. They are closed during university breaks and have limited hours during finals week.

ASU Undergraduate Student Government Director of Safety Escort Service Wyatt Hillard is a third year student majoring in psychology and criminology/criminal justice. He says that the service has grown in the past year.

“It isn’t unusual for us to receive more than 100 calls per night,” Hillard said.

The busiest times of the school year are during football games, midterms and finals. The busiest days appear to be Tuesday through Thursday between 8 and 9 p.m.

“Each night, we traditionally have anywhere between one and three vehicles in operation at a time,” Hillard said.

The vehicles are driven by ASU students. Safety Escort hires about twice a year, for the fall and spring semesters. All that an applicant needs is to be enrolled in ASU classes and have a valid driver’s license.

Students at the Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic or West campuses can call ASU Police at (480) 965-3456 for escort services.
