Greek leaders set 2020 goals together
Newly elected chapter presidents for ASU fraternities and sororities on campus recently attended an annual retreat where they created action plans for their respective chapters and worked to strengthen their connections with one another as ASU Greek leaders.
On Jan. 10–12, about 70 leaders gathered near Prescott National Forest for team building activities and skill-building sessions to empower them in the philanthropy, service and leadership work they’ll be doing in 2020. The Presidents’ Enrichment and Empowerment Retreat (PEER) was the third annual gathering for Greek leaders from all five councils at ASU: The National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, the Panhellenic Association, the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
Facilitators for the event included fraternity and sorority life staff and various campus partners including Changemaker Central @ ASU, Sun Devil Wellness and Sexual Violence Prevention. Facilitators shared resources and expertise about how community service, wellness and campus safety work with the fraternity and sorority life at ASU on initiatives that benefit the entire ASU community and beyond.
One leader attending was Rick Silva, a leader from Gamma Zeta Alpha in the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations. Silva is a senior from Mt. Soledad, California, studying business sustainability.
Silva said that his favorite part of the retreat was bonding with other leaders in the NALFO Council. In fact, he said a big factor in his original choice to join this organization was his shared Latino heritage with the other members.
Silva’s favorite Greek life memory is going on road trips with his chapter brothers and meeting other brothers from out-of-state.
“I am looking forward to having fun with my council and chapter members as I am getting ready to graduate,” Silva said. “I want to be able to look back and cherish these memories.”
Another leader attending was sophomore Taylor Weissman, representing Chi Omega. Weissman is from Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is studying business management.
Weissman has been a member of ASU Greek life for nearly two years now and says her favorite memory so far has been traveling abroad with some of her sisters this past summer.
She said she’s looking forward to her chapter’s planned philanthropy for Make-A-Wish and that she was thankful for the chance to connect with other Greek leaders.
“I loved getting to meet and network with the other leaders in the Greek community,” she said.
