School spirit brings fresh life and energy to the ASU community, and it’s hard to find someone more spirited than Sarika Sawant.

Sawant is a third-year student pursuing a degree in medical studies. She’s also the winner of the Sun Devil Spirit Award at the 2021 Pitchfork Awards. Sawant says that to her, school spirit means showing pride in being a Sun Devil.

“It means being able to truly embrace the ASU culture and traditions.”

Sawant is a Barrett Mentor, the director of sisterhood for her sorority, Phi Sigma Rho, and a member of the American Medical Student Association, HOSA: Future Health Professionals and the Interdisciplinary Arts and Performances Club.

She is also involved with the Pan Asian Dance Coalition, where she helps advance initiatives of diversity and inclusion at ASU through dance theater performances and cultural events.

Sawant came to ASU from a small school and is most proud of being able to integrate herself into the ASU community from such a different environment. She says she's so honored and excited to win her award, which was announced virtually this spring at the 10th annual Pitchfork Awards ceremony

“It’s nice to be appreciated and recognized for my involvement in the ASU community.”

Sawant says she shows her Sun Devil Spirit by attending and supporting as many events that different clubs have and getting involved in different clubs and activities.

“I think it’s a great way to take a break from classes and also to meet new people,” she said.

After college, Sawant is planning to attend medical school to become an anesthesiologist or OB-GYN.

With the fall semester right around the corner, let’s all follow Sawant’s lead and show our Sun Devil spirit this year!
