West Valley student body president

Sedra Shahin, a Barrett, The Honors College student who is entering her senior year at Arizona State University and triple-majoring in business law, business administration and business public services at W. P. Carey School of Business, proudly wears many hats.

“College is what you make of it,” Shahin, who was born in Latakia, Syria, said. “I came in knowing what I wanted to do. I was going to be a four-major person, a quadruple major, and I was like okay maybe that's a little too crazy so I ended up taking three majors.”

“I knew I wanted to be in student government. I set my eyes on that and I went from being a senator to student body president. That was my end goal. I achieved that,” she added.

From her significant responsibility as West Valley campus undergraduate student body president, two on-campus jobs, a summer internship and involvement in several ASU clubs, Shahin has a lot to balance.

“Honestly, it takes a village to get to where I am today in balancing it all,” she said. “Specifically I use Google Calendar. I literally, at one point in the semester, had to block out the five minutes it took me to walk from one meeting to another because that's how tight my schedule was.”

Saying yes to many different opportunities is what landed Shahin a summer job as chief operating officer intern for Wells Fargo’s Business Risk & Control and Regulatory Oversight Early Careers Program.

“Leap at every opportunity, when an opportunity presents itself to you,” Shahin said. “I always kept in mind, if I wasn't ready I wouldn't have the opportunity. When I got that Wells Fargo internship offer I was really intimidated, I wasn't expecting to get it. I went to my mom and I was like, ‘I don't even know if I want to take this because I'm so scared,’ and she reminded me, ‘if you weren't ready, you wouldn't have the opportunity.’ That's how I was with the student body president position as well.”

Shahin said that her involvement in ASU’s West Valley Undergraduate Student Government (USG) prepared her for the summer internship with Wells Fargo.

“I have taken so much from student government and it made me into the person that I am today,” Shahin said. “Like how to network — something that is really essential for a business student — I learned that from being in student government. How to have a conversation, how to lead a meeting, how to have empathy for a team that you're leading. Those are all skills that I know I'm going to be able to translate into the workplace wherever I go.”

Going beyond relevant work experience that will continue to build her strong resumé, the summer internship opportunity with Wells Fargo will provide Shahin with the possibility of full-time work after her expected graduation in spring 2026.

“What they said is, if I do really well in the internship I could get a return offer to come back as a full-time analyst,” she said.

In the internship role, Shahin will be working on a team under Wells Fargo chief operating officer, Scott Powell. Shahin will help identify and mitigate risks that impact employee-related processes, work on strengthening internal controls and supporting initiatives that promote compliance, efficiency and operational excellence.
