ASU students from Sun Devil Movement for Violence Prevention are raising awareness about consent and healthy relationships during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On April 2 and April 4, students kicked off the month of action with Consent and Beyond events at all ASU campuses.

The event aimed to teach students about resources available to them and address the root causes of violence, including misogyny. Activities included a board where students could post notes stating how people can ask for consent.

Karla Chicuate, a sophomore at ASU studying criminology and criminal justice, helped table at the Downtown Phoenix event. She said Consent and Beyond is important because sexual assault is often not talked about on college campuses.

“We always try to team up with other organizations to make it more unified,” Chicuate said.

Rachael Mowry, a junior at ASU studying kinesiology and personal health, is a Sun Devil Support Network advisor and a Sexual and Relationship Violence Prevention Department peer education facilitator. She also helped table at the event and said many ASU departments and student organizations participated in this event together to raise awareness about consent.

“[We are] bringing awareness to Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” Mowry said.

Mowry said there are a lot of resources available on campus for students, including peer advisors, the ASU Police Department, the Sexual and Relationship Violence Prevention Program, ASU Health Services, ASU Counseling Services and more.

“[They are] all working together to point you in the right direction to help you do what you can to feel safe and be successful,” Mowry said.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month events are happening all month long, including self-care events, performances, wellness activities and days of action, such as Denim Day. Find out more about the month and what events are coming up.
