Sun Devil TedTalk and Tacos event celebrates Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month

Sun Devils across ASU hosted events to celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month. The celebrations encouraged students to learn and celebrate histories, cultures and contributions of the Hispanic/Latinx community in the United States.
Students gathered on Sept. 28 for a dialogue about the unique experiences of Latinx men/masculine individuals, community impacts of machismo, and how it affects men, women and the LGBTQ+ community.
TedTalk and Tacos, presented by ASU’s Sexual and Relationship Violence Prevention program in the Multicultural Communities of Excellence location on ASU’s Tempe campus featured a screening of Machismo hurts men too, a
TedTalk on Machismo Culture followed by an in depth discussion among Sun Devils guided by Amira de la Garza and Jaime Herrera, both assistant professors at ASU.
Students were encouraged to listen to their experiences and ask questions as they shared the complimentary tacos that were provided.
Amy Tran, a sophomore studying political science, attended the event to learn more about Hispanic culture. Tran said she chose to attend TedTalk and Tacos because she wanted to become more knowledgeable about Hispanic and Latinx culture and celebrate the month.
A member of Alpha Phi Gamma, an Asian American-interest sorority, Tran said her sorority encourages members to attend cultural events presented within their campus communities..
“I feel like as an Asian American and as a student in political science I kinda felt like I just want to learn a little more about other cultures,” Tran said.
Many students interested in celebrating Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month and learning about different cultures attended the event.
Dayra Torres, a senior engineering major and member of El Concilio, a Latinx/Chicanx/Hispanic coalition said she makes an effort to support culture within the ASU community.
She described the TedTalk screening and dialogue as a success, crediting the experience for helping her to better understand Hispanic culture and to get more exposure to it.
