Sun Devils compete for the intramural basketball championships at the Bank

Hundreds of students across ASU signed up for the intramural basketball season in January. By the end of the playoffs, the best 14 teams met at Wells Fargo Arena on March 15 to compete in the five-on-five championship games.

Only one team in each of the seven leagues could end the season with a win in the championship game, but everyone who competed came away with a winning experience.

Allison Weller, a senior double majoring in business management and sports business, played in the championship for the Shoot Girls (Women’s league)  and the Basketball Joes (CoRec league) as a small forward. Weller sees involvement in intramural sports as being an amazing way to continue her passion for the sport she loves.

“I play intramural basketball because I’ve played basketball my whole life growing up and after I decided to not play at the collegiate level, I saw intramurals as a great way to still continue my love for the sport,” she said.  

Weller added that playing in the championships at Wells Fargo Arena isn’t like playing in an ordinary game.

“Playing in Wells Fargo Arena gives the game a whole different experience. You know really good players have played here and you’re playing on the same court as them.”

Both of Weller’s teams won their championship games.

Tanner Perry, a junior studying sports business and a marketing coordinator for Sun Devil Fitness Sports Programs, competed in the Men’s C league and the CoRec league championships. Both of the teams that Tanner played for, the Basketball Joes and T.IC 3.0, won their championship games.

Perry played intramural basketball, softball and flag football on nine different teams during this academic year. Perry said that he plays intramural sports for the social opportunities and also to exercise.

“Personally, I play to get out there and play with my friends. It’s a good way to meet people who you wouldn’t normally meet. It’s also a good way to stay active,” he said.  

Sam Buss is a sophomore studying computer science engineering. Buss played in the Men’s Greek league championship game for the Sigma Pi team as a small forward.

“Any type of exercise is a good way to de-stress, but when you’re doing it with your friends or your fraternity, it’s just so much more fun that way because you know everyone. And then when you’re playing against people who you also know, it makes it more of a friendly environment,” he said.
