ASU Men’s Lacrosse eyes the May playoffs in a winning season
The ASU’s men’s lacrosse team has been making waves in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association this season with a current record of 9–1, and they don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.
The Sun Devil club lacrosse team has a rich history at ASU, going back 51 years. In the last 12 years, the Sun Devils have made it to 10 National Tournaments, three Final Fours and have been the national runner-up twice.
And the Sun Devils are on their way to making a run in the playoffs again this May.
Trevor Driscoll is a senior in Barrett, the Honors College, and is the main captain and president of the lacrosse team. Originally from Las Vegas, Driscoll is studying supply-chain management and has been a member of the team for four years.
Driscoll believes that the team’s culture is part of what has propelled them to success.
“We really try to emphasize not getting down on one another,” Driscoll said. “If someone messes up, you want to be building them up and giving them constructive criticism. It’s definitely huge for us to keep the big picture in mind.”
ASU men’s lacrosse has cultivated a positive culture built on hard work, active communication and professionalism. According to their website, they try to run the team as close to an NCAA program as they can: They adhere to academic eligibility standards set by MCLA, they play against regional and national competitors, they attract a professional coaching staff and they have a roster of 50 athletes.
Paul Koestler is a junior studying aeronautical management technology and unmanned aerial systems; he’s a co-captain and a seasoned leader on the team. He said that each player actively pushes each other to reach their full potential, on and off the field.
“Everyone is very committed. Nobody skips and everyone knows their role. Everyone cares for each other. We’re like a big family, a big group of brothers. There’s no negativity,” said Koestler.
The Sun Devils have two more games left to play in the regular season. They will face Grand Canyon University on April 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Phoenix, and their last game is against the University of Arizona on April 13 at 1 p.m. at their home field at ASU’s West campus. Follow them on Twitter @ASULacrosse for updates, and livestream their home game against U of A on their YouTube channel.
Come out to these last two games and support the ASU lacrosse team as they finish out the regular season with a bang!
