LGBTQ+ students connect at ASU Rainbow Welcome 2019

2 minutes

The Rainbow Coalition and Culture@ASU hosted this year’s Rainbow Welcome event, a celebration of ASU’s LGBTQ+ community, on Aug. 29 during the Devils on Mill tailgate in Downtown Tempe.

LGBTQ+ students and allies were able to meet each other and learn more about LGBTQ+ groups and organizations on campus and in the surrounding area.

Leo Cevalos, a sophomore studying applied biological sciences on ASU’s Polytechnic campus, tabled at Rainbow Welcome for Qmunity at ASU. He is vice president of the social club.

Cevalos has been involved with Qmunity since his first year at ASU. He moved to Arizona from West Virginia where he says, “there weren’t a lot of places to be openly queer.” At ASU, however, he found a group of people that he really connected with.

Cevalos says that Qmunity is a “safe space for queer, questioning and allied people to hang out, have a good time, de-stress, talk and create a community of people.”

Dominique Browning, an interdisciplinary student with a concentration in digital culture and innovation in society, tabled for ASU’s roller derby team at Rainbow Welcome.

Browning discovered the roller derby team at Rainbow Welcome as a first-year student.

“It’s a great way to feel like part of a community in a school so large,” Browning said.
