ASU women’s Ultimate Frisbee team shares the ultimate conversation

Last semester ASU’s Caliente Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team’s President Kristen Viscarra, a psychology and family human development senior, applied for a Woodside Community Action Grant. Her project idea? To start the Ultimate Conversation.

The Woodside Community Action Grant provides students who have high-impact ideas and a passion for community service with the funding to carry out their proposed project. To receive a grant students must apply and complete an evaluation process.

Viscarra and a few of her teammates formed a project team to make her idea a reality. Their project was awarded an $850 Woodside grant to launch the project.

Viscarra and her team plan to host two Ultimate clinics. The purpose of the clinics is to expose new players to Ultimate Frisbee and incorporate guided conversation about equality in both the sport and the real world. The clinics will be free and open to the community.

Arizona’s professional Women's Ultimate team, the Sidewinders, has agreed to collaborate with Viscarra’s project and help out with the clinics. Kody Lippincott, a player for the Sidewinders, is a coach for the ASU women's team.

The clinics will include free Ultimate Frisbee play, guided talks and discussions about equality in regards to race and gender, opportunities to socialize and free giveaways.

“I think that the project itself is very sustainable,” said Viscarra. Receiving the grant and making the dream of the clinics a reality, she says, is among her proudest achievements.

The idea behind the project came from Viscarra's personal experience in dealing with inequality. Parks or public spaces can tend to be more male-dominated or exclusive, said Viscarra.

“It's one of our main goals as a club and in the general Ultimate community to be as inclusive as possible to all members,” Viscarra said.

The two clinics were originally scheduled for March 21 and April 4 at ASU. They had to postpone the clinics due to COVID-19, but you can receive updates regarding when they will be rescheduled on the project’s Facebook or Instagram or find more information about ASU Women’s Ultimate Frisbee on the team’s website. Everyone is encouraged to come join the Ultimate Conversation.
