Brotherhood and community at ASU Sigma Lambda Beta

Adrian Muñiz is in his senior year at ASU, majoring in kinesiology. Originally from Santa Clarita, Calif., Muñiz traded the beaches and waves and found something he believes is far more valuable, long lasting friendship and brotherhood. 

Muñiz is the current president of the Chi Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. Last semester, Muñiz and the fraternity earned the Multicultural Greek Council Chapter of the Year Award at ASU.

“This past year we took time as a chapter to self-reflect and go back to the roots the international organization was founded upon (brotherhood, cultural awareness, community service and scholarship). Honestly, we were a little shocked when we found out we had won the award but we were very honored to have been awarded,” he said.

Muniz says it felt surreal to be recognized for putting into action what his organization was founded upon. Muñiz shared more about his Greek life experience with ASU Student Life and how it has affected him.

When was your group founded?

We were founded nationally on April 4, 1986, and chartered here at Arizona State University in December of 2001. 

Why did you join Greek life?

When I first came to Arizona State I didn't really have an intention of joining Greek life, but I went to an event with a good friend. 

From this I was able to see other students who are not only proud of where they came from but who wanted to educate others on it and spread a sense of community, which is something I had wanted since starting at university. 

What has it meant to you to be part of your fraternity?

Being in Sigma Lambda Beta has meant [a lot] to me because my first year at Arizona State was hard because I was out of state. 

But being in this organization I was also provided a support system, a group of guys who are always there for me through the tough times or the holidays I can't go home for. Even those brothers from areas in California back home made sure I knew I had people to go to there as well. 

What’s your favorite part of being involved in your fraternity?

My favorite part of being in this fraternity is the cultural awareness aspect because I love to learn about new places and cultures. One thing that I think is special about this organization is that we live out the pillars we were founded on. An example of this is that we do an annual spring break trip to other countries. During the course of this trip we get to not only learn about other cultures but also live them as well.
