ASU Student Life editor’s picks: Best of Miguel J. Gutierrez

2 minutes

Editor’s note: Since ASU Student Life is a news site by students, for students, we wanted to give our graduating reporters a chance to share their favorite work from their tenure as ASU Student Life storytellers. We’ll miss them in the newsroom but appreciate their time with us!

My name is Miguel J. Gutierrez, and I recently graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s in filmmaking practices.

I have been working for ASU Student Life mainly as a videographer and editor since December of 2017. I have enjoyed helping to tell the stories of students across all campuses for the past year and a half. Before I leave ASU Student Life for any future endeavours, I want to share some of my favorite stories that I have covered in my time as a storyteller.

1. ASU Hispanic Convocation, fall 2017

The first convocation I went to and one of my first assignments became one of my favorite videos. I got to experience the convocation I knew I wanted to be a part of during my senior year.

2. Campus Question: Can you recycle this?

After working on so many Campus Question videos I needed to have one in my list of favorites.

This one stands out to me because instead of simply asking a question we play a game of right or wrong while informing students of what they can recycle around campus.

3. Infernofest 2018

For this story, we spoke with Undergraduate Student Government and Programming and Activities Board members and got to hear why they enjoy putting on such great events like this one for students to enjoy.

4. ASU Battleship

Students were trying to sink each other’s canoes in the Sun Devil Fitness Complex pool in Tempe for the Sun Devil Intramural sport of Battleship. We spoke to the sports program managers and participants about why they enjoyed having unique activities like Battleship available at ASU.

5. Sun Devils love their Super Smash Bros. esports Community

Alex Schaff, the head community manager for Super Smash Bros. within the Esports Association, and regular participants of the biweekly Smash Bros. meetup gave their insight in this mini-documentary about why they love playing an 18-year-old video game.

Students love getting together to enjoy a night of competition and fun with a game series like no other with a community that keeps growing over the years.
