ASU’s 2020 outstanding fraternity and sorority award winners

Each year ASU Fraternity and Sorority Life nominates sorority and fraternity members for the FSL Honors Fraternity/Sorority Member of the Year.

These awards annually recognize the hard work and impact of high-achieving fraternity men and sorority women within the Greek life community at ASU.

Due to COVID-19, the award winners were announced virtually on ASU’s Fraternity and Sorority Life Twitter and Instagram accounts instead of at a live awards event. Throughout the month of April, each day a new winner was revealed. (Check out the full list of winners.)

Fraternity Member of the Year winner Sebastian Cordova, 22, of Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity Inc., was appreciative of his nomination.

“It was such a nice experience when I received the email saying I was nominated. It made me feel like someone recognized my impact,” Cordova said.

The air transportation management major and Ecuador native is also the director of public relations for the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations Council, one of five Greek life councils at ASU. Through his involvement, Cordova has been able to acquire internships, travel around the nation to represent his fraternity and create networks.

He is thankful for his brothers at Lambda Sigma Upsilon, especially Valentino Mejia, who nominated him, and Michael Abramson III, his bohique or healer, who guided him through the recruitment process.

“I would like to thank all the brothers of the Wahati Chapter of Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc. for all their support and consideration,” Cordova said.

The Sorority Member of the Year winners were Elizabeth Rodriguez, 21, of Lambda Theta Nu Sorority Inc. and Madeline Bergstrom, 21, of Sigma Kappa.

Rodriguez is graduating with a degree in criminology and criminal justice and a minor in social welfare. She was also the chair of NALFO as well as a building manager for the Greek Leadership Community Center.

“I am really thankful for the award. I never expected to be nominated. I am thankful for the ASU Greek community for helping me grow,” Rodriguez said.

For anyone thinking of joining Greek life at ASU Rodriguez said, “Do not be afraid to get involved and explore.”

Not only did Bergstrom win Sorority Member of the Year, she also won Council Officer of the Year. In previous years she was the Panhellenic Association   president and vice president of member development.

The political science major is graduating as a first-generation Greek life student. As an out-of-state student, Bergstrom joined Sigma Kappa to meet new people.

“I have been able to go to conferences and gain leadership experience, and I think there are a lot of skills that I learned that I will carry for the rest of my life,” Bergstrom said.

Some of her favorite memories from her time as a sorority member include the Women’s Leadership Dinner and PowHER empowerment conference

“I was honored to even be nominated alongside great women. I was really able to grow as a person and a college student because of Sigma Kappa,” Bergstrom said.
