Student band Eddie and the Getaway on opening for Icona Pop
As the clock struck 2 a.m. in Sweden at the height of the summer season, the electronic beats of the powerful female duo Icona Pop were blasting through the speakers of Sun Devils around the world.
During the second show of the virtual summer concert series Live From ASU, Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt of Icona Pop played their biggest hits like “I Love It,” “We Got That Cool” and “All Night.”
Jawo and Hjelt streamed their music from their home studio, fully equipped with colorful strobe lights and turntables. From start to end, the Swedish duo hyped up their audience and made sure the virtual atmosphere was lively.
After their set, Sun Devils had the chance to ask the duo questions during the live Q&A. They dished about their favorite places to play on tour and who they would like to collaborate with next.
Along with every amazing headliner there is an amazing opening act. And at the July 10 show students were treated to an opening set from a band that is a familiar face to the ASU stage.
The 2019 winner of ASU’s Battle of the Bands and opener for Galantis at Devilpalooza, Eddie and the Getaway, kicked off the evening for Icona Pop.
Live from their home studio in Nashville, Eddie and the Getaway played what they like to call a mix of 2000s rock, modern country and pop.
The lead vocalist Eddie Eberle, 20, who is a third-year business entrepreneurship major, had fun performing in front of a virtual audience.
“The cool thing was knowing there was a large amount of people tuning in and watching us. I'm proud to be an ASU student. Arizona State is so cutting edge, and putting on these shows for its students is great,” Eberle said.
The band is looking forward to releasing their debut single in September and their debut album a little bit down the road.
“During quarantine, I have been writing lots and we have been doing tons of recording. I am very excited for people to hear our new music and relate to it,” Eberle said.
